Vientiane is Laos capital and with a population of 760,000 the largest city in the country. Vientiane is situated on the banks of the Mekong River near the border with Thailand. It is a very laid back city with a fine mix of French architecture and Buddhist temples. The most striking one for sure is the golden 16th century Pha That Luang (That Luang or Great Stupa), Laos’s national symbol of sovereignty and an icon of Buddhism in Laos and is definitely a must visit. Along the tree lined streets and broad boulevards a visit at Wat Si Saket, one of the oldest temples in Vientiane, featuring thousands of Buddha images, Wat Si Muang, built on a Hindu shrine and Wat Ong Teu Mahavihan, known for its 16th century bronze Buddha sheltered by a carved wooden masterpiece are definitely worth a visit.

Shopping is easy in Vientiane, try the Talat Sao (morning market), for all kinds of colorful textiles, silk and other decorates. There even plenty of specialized woodcarving, mulberry paper and basketry shops around made form bamboo and rattan.

Vientiane doesn’t really have nightlife but there are plenty of restaurants and bars with a great variety of local and international cuisine.
